One of Bagley's best known and popular men died while at work at Borgerding Timber Company, on Thursday afternoon of last week.
He was Leslie "Red" Brustad, age 52, a graduate of Bagley high school of the Class of 1931. A member of First Lutheran Church, "Reds" interest in his home town community spread out to include a number of activities. While he was in school he was a member of the basketball team and took part in other sports as well. After graduation he was a valued member of Bagley's baseball team for a number of years and in later years switched his sports activity to horse shows as a member of the Bagley Saddle Club. An active member of the Legion Post 16 of Bagley, Les had served his post well as commander in 1955 and for 20 years was a member of the Bagley Fire Department. His retirement from that organization took place just a few years ago.
Les was a veteran of World War II and served in the Navy. Both before and after his service in the armed forces he was employed by the Clearwater Lumber Co., and later, when this company sold out to the Borgerding Timber Company, Les worked with this organization until the day of his death. He was driving among the lumber piles in his car when death came as a result of a heart attack.
His marriage to Lois Falkum took place at Bagley on October 16, 1941. Three children were born to them. They are Larry, Shirley and Ricky, all at home. In addition to his wife and children, the survivors include: five brothers, Art, Melvin and Clifford, all of Bagley; Orval of Cloquet; Floyd of Anoka; and two sisters, Jeanette (Mrs. Chas Walker) of Bagley; and Lenora (Mrs. Lloyd Halseth) of Bagley. Parents Lawrence and Anna Brustad preceded him in death. Funeral services were held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church at Bagley on Monday afternoon, March 9. The Rev. Wendell Shiell of First Lutheran Church had charge of the last rites. Irvin Blix Post 16 of Bagley took charge of the military part of the service. Burial will be in Bagley Cemetery under the direction of the Cease Funeral Home. [2]
