- LEAVENWORTH - Hermod Bakke, 93, a longtime resident of Leavenworth and a well-known ski jumping promoter and builder, died Friday afternoon, June 9, 1995, in the Cashmere Convalescent Center.
He was born June 2, 1902, in Hurum, Norway, to Knut and Marie (Grotrud) Bakke. He grew up and received his early education in Norway, where he attended a horticulture school. He came to the United States in May of 1928 and was a resident of North Dakota before coming to Wenatchee in the early 1930s. He worked in the orchards and at C & O Nursery. He moved to Leavenworth in 1932, where he worked at many different jobs, including construction of the Leavenworth Fish Hatchery. He later became a full-time carpenter.
He married Grace Sitton on June 2, 1939, in the Lutheran Church in Seattle, and they made their home in Leavenworth.
Mr. Bakke and his brother, Magnus, were instrumental in the building and promotion of the 90-meter ski jumping hill in Leavenworth, named "Bakke Hill." He helped on the ski jumping hills at the 1960 Winter Olympics in Squaw Valley. The United States Ski Association elected him to the National Ski Hall of Fame in 1972 in Ishpeming, Mich.
He was a member of the Leavenworth Community United Methodist Church and Epledalen Sons of Norway in Wenatchee.
Survivors include his wife, at the home; one son, Hermod Bakke, Bellingham; two daughters, Grace Pulse, Leavenworth, and Mary Oxos, Cashmere; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four stepgrandchildren. He was preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.
Arrangements are by Ward's Funeral Chapel, Leavenworth.
