Ellen Ardell Christenson was born on September 6, 1915, in Terrace, MN. She was the second daughter born to Christian and Olava Christenson. Ellen grew up on a farm near Terrace and attended school through the 8th grade. Because of the Great Depression her schooling ended and she had to start working to help support the rest of her family. She did ironing and housework locally before moving to Montevideo to waitress in a café owned by relatives. Ellen waitressed in several communities, all the time sending money home to her parents.
In 1942, she married Albin Abraham. They farmed near Sedan until moving to Lake Amelia near Villard in 1944. Two sons were born to this marriage, Albin,
Jr. and Eugene. In 1993, Ellen and Albin moved to the Glenview Apartments in Glenwood. Albin passed away in 2001. Ellen continued living in the apartment until a year ago when a series of health issues forced her to move to a nursing home and assisted living. Ellen passed away at Glenwood Retirement Village on Tuesday, June 21, 2001, having lived to the age of 95 years.
Ellen made dishcloths, crocheted many doilies and knitted numerous afghans, sweaters, and warm socks for her family. She baked great chocolate chip cookies, sugar cookies and doughnuts. The same great flavor always remained but the shapes of the sugar cookies changed from round to square/oblong and round doughnuts became logs. Shortcuts were necessary as it became difficult to stand for long periods of time. Homemade bread and lefse were more of her specialties. She also loved to fish, do puzzles and play cards. Visitors could always expect a cup of coffee and one of her home baked goodies. They might also get coaxed into a card game or dice game.
Ellen is survived by her sons, Albin (Hazel) Abraham, Jr., and Eugene (Kathie) Abraham, all of Villard, MN; six grandchildren, Jay (Julie) Abraham, Mindy (Frank) Hoffmann, Tim (Stacey) Abraham, Chris Abraham, Stacie (Bryne) Rising, and Kari Abraham and her best friend, Brent Hoffmann; eight great-grandchildren, Jenna, Nick, Gabe and Halle Abraham, Calvin, Zack and Luke Hoffmann and Sidney Abraham, brother Sigvard and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Albin; her parents; a brother, Curtis Christenson; sister, Lula Jermstad; and an infant sibling, Sigvard's twin. [2]
