| 4351 | Viggo Elvevoll passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 17th at Maple Hill Hospice in Langley, BC at the age of 69. Viggo was born on October 12th, 1949 in Mo i Rana, Norway to Leif and Helen (Olaug) Elvevoll. Viggo moved to Canada with his family in 1957 where they settled in New Westminster. In 1971 Viggo was accepted to the Vancouver Police Department. During his 32 years of service, Viggo worked in Patrol, V.I.I.U., Public Information Counter, Detectives North, VICE, C.L.E.U, and the Drug Unit. Viggo loved the outdoors whether it was boating on the ocean, camping along the unbeaten path, or spending time enjoying the family cabin. He was dependable, hard working, entertaining, brave, compassionate, honourable, and dedicated. He had an excellent sense of humour and he will always be remembered for his legendary "antics". Viggo is lovingly remembered by his daughter Jennifer Elvevoll Coles, his son Kristopher Elvevoll and daughter-in-law Natalie McDonagh Elvevoll, his brother Hans Elvevoll, his 3 grandchildren Kris, Quinn and Bailey, and numerous additional family members, friends, and former colleagues. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Harvey Anderson Funeral Home in Kerkhoven and one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials are preferred. He was born March 8, 1959, in Benson to Sheldon and Donna (Paaverud) Baker. He grew up in Kerkhoven, graduating from Kerkhoven High School in 1977. He married Naomi Powers on June 9, 1990, in rural Paynesville. He worked at Baker Motor Sales, the family business, for 25 years. He was a member of the Kerkhoven Lutheran Church where he served as a deacon. He served the Kerkhoven Fire Department for 21 years, serving as fire chief, assistant chief and engineer for a number of years. He was active in the Kerkhoven Sportsmans Club, Simon Lake Hunting Club and the Kerkhoven Fishing Group. He played baseball with the Norway Lake Lakers from his high school years until 1990. He is survived by his wife; children Briana and Kyle at home; parents of Kerkhoven; three brothers, Kent (and Judy) Baker of Kerkhoven, Terry (and Diane) Baker of New Bern, N.C., Kevin Baker of Madison, Wis., and other relatives. | 4369 | «b»«i»Obituary«/b» Clarence Albert Arenson of Brooten, MN died at the Belgrade Nursing Home on April 15, 1996 after a brief illness at the age of 84. He had been in declining health for several years. He was born January 22, 1912 in Brooten, the son of George Arenson and Ida Evenson. He grew to manhood there being baptized by Rev. Tolo and confirmed in the Lutheran faith by Rev. A. H. Hoyme at Trinity Lutheran Church and was graduated from Brooten High School in 1930. After graduation he worked at several jobs including car sales, gas station operation, and at the Willmar Produce. In the late 1930's he was employed at the Brooten Creamery. On June 24, 1936 he was married to Verna Syverson of Gilchrist Township, Pope County, MN. To this union three children were born. During World War II he was employed by Northwest Airlines in St. Paul, MN building B-24 and B-25 bombers for the war effort. After the war he returned to Brooten where he opened a restaurant and pool hall. In 1956 he took over the Mobil Bulk Agent position delivering petroleum supplies to area homes, businesses, and farmers. This he continued until his retirement in 1974. He was known among his many friends as a great fisherman and fished the lakes near Brooten his entire life. In his younger days he enjoyed playing baseball. He was a strong member of the 1932 Minnesota State "C" Division Championship Baseball Team from Brooten. He served as a volunteer fireman for more than 20 years. In his retirement he continued to fish and enjoyed attending local auctions always looking for that chair or table to save and refinish to its original glory. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Verna, daughter Sharon Reyno of Brooten and sons Barron (Carole) Arenson of Tempe, AZ and John (Betty) Arenson of Littleton, CO; six grandchildren: Shelly Reyno Carter of Wauwatosa, WI, David Reyno of Aliso Viejo, CA, Noah and Peter Arenson of Tempe, AZ, Beth Tucker Kuettel of Lake Jackson, TX, and Kristy Tucker McAdoo of LeRoy, NY, and four great-granddaughters: Haley Sharon Carter, Wauwatosa, WI, Megan Marie Kuettel, Lake Jackson, TX, Krystal and Kimberley Tucker of Grand Junction, CO; one brother: Donald Arenson of Edina, MN, two sisters: Eleanor Harrison of Vancouver, WA and Violet Snyder of White Bear Lake, MN; two stepsisters: Dorothy Robinson Syzmiot of St. Paul, MN and Katherine Robinson Dean of Florida. He is preceded in death by his father, George, in 1918, his mother, Ida, in 1963, sisters Hazel (1982), Mildred (1975), Cora (1969), Mabel (1995) and two brothers, Walter (1956) and James (1983). Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brooten with Rev. Rebecca Sogge officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery. | 4370 | «b»«i»Obituary«/b» Donald Elsworth Arenson was born September 27, 1917 in Brooten, Minnesota to George and Ida (Evenson) Arenson. He was raised in Brooten and graduated from high school in 1936. After his education he and his brother Jimmy owned and operated Arenson Brothers' Garage in Brooten. In March 1941 he joined the US Army and served in the Pacific Theater. After his discharge in August 1945 he returned to Brooten. He married Ruby Skinner on February 14, 1947 in Minneapolis. After marriage they lived in Glenwood until moving to Minneapolis in 1950. He began working for a car dealership on Lake Street, and in 1954 he purchased that business and renamed it D&H Motors. In 1973 he sold the dealership and began working for Walser Buick. He retired in December 1982, but continued selling cars for many years. Don was a life member of Fred Babcock VFW Post 5555 in Richfield, a member of the St. Louis Park American Legion and a former member of the Optimist Club. While in auto sales he received the Buick Professional President's Award - one of their highest honors. He enjoyed fishing, family and friends, and spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his children: Greg and wife Carol of Prior Lake, Vicki and husband Dave Bess of Burnsville, Dave and wife Sue of Edina; 7 grandchildren: Keith Arenson & wife Azure, Kacie and Christopher Arenson, Kari and Jason Bess, Geoff and Drew Arenson. He is also survived by his longtime companion Toddy Wright of Edina and many relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his wife Ruby in May, 1989, his parents, 3 brothers and 6 sisters. Don passed away on Sunday morning, January 9, 2005 at Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minnesota at the age of 87. Services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 14, 2005 at Thomson-Dougherty Funeral Home, 2535 Park Avenue, Minneapolis. Interment with Military Honors with be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 11, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Brooten with burial following in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Noah Arenson, Peter Arenson, David Reyno (grandsons); Sheldon Baker, Dale Fauskee, Gary Fauskee. Arrangements were by Hoplin Funeral Home, Glenwood, MN. Verna Viola Arenson was born July 4, 1914 in Gilchrist Township, Pope County Minnesota to Edwin L. and Elizabeth (Ravnestad) Syverson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Norwegian language by Rev. G. G. Beito at West Lake Johanna Church. She attended District 16 country school through the 8th grade and later graduated salutatorian from Glenwood High School in 1931. She attended Normal Training in Glenwood and started her distinguished teacher career in 1932 in District 81 by Sedan. She also taught in Districts 16, 34 and 56. After taking a break from teaching for 15 years to raise 3 children she returned to the classroom and taught first and second grades in Sunburg and Elrosa for 18 years. On June 20, 1936 she married Clarence Arenson of Brooten at the Lutheran parsonage in Alexandria by Rev. C. E. Hanson. They made their home in Brooten the first years of marriage before moving to St. Paul during World War II. They returned to Brooten in 1946 when Clarence opened a restaurant and pool hall and later became the Mobil bulk agent. She taught Sunday School and Summer Bible School at Trinity Lutheran Church for many years. After her retirement from teaching in 1974, she and Clarence made a number of trips to visit their children and their families in California, Arizona and Colorado. She enjoyed the opportunity to meet the many friends of her children and to attended musical concerts and church programs in which her children and grandchildren participated. Three children were born to Verna and Clarence: Sharon, Barron and John. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1986 with a large gathering of many friends and relatives. Verna planned the festivities just like she had for so many of her school programs over the years. It is a celebration that is remembered still. She is survived by her children: Sharon Reyno of Brooten, Barron (Carole) Arenson of Tempe, Arizona, and John (Betty) Arenson of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren: David (Susan) Reyno of Irvine, CA, Michelle (Peter) Reyno Carter of Wauwatosa, WI, Noah (Bridget) Arenson of Tempe, Arizona, Peter (Connie) Arenson of Glendale, Arizona, Beth (Mark) Tucker Kuettel of Lake Jackson, TX, and Kristy (Mark) Tucker McAdoo of Golden, CO and ten great grandchildren; brothers, Alden Syverson and Wilton (Elsie) Syverson of Minneapolis, and sister Dolores Iverson of Glenwood. She married Hilliard Howard (Jack) Baker and moved to Kerkhoven to make her home. Mr. Jack Baker died in 1966. She married Maurice H. Baker on Nov. 10, 1968. The bride is a graduate of the Glenwood high school and the Glenwood Normal Training department. She has taught for several years in schools of this neighborhood. The bridegroom is a graduate of the Brooten high school class of 1930. For the past year or more he has been a co-partner in the operation of the Continental Oil Co.'s filling station here. Miss Eleanor Arenson, daughter of Mrs. Floyd Robinson, became the bride of Charles Harrison, son of Mrs. O. E. Harrison of Lisbon, N. D. and Miss Florence Hanson, daughter of Mrs. Rose Hanson, was united in marriage to James Arenson, son of Mrs. Floyd Robinson, in a double wedding ceremony Sunday morning, July 25. The service was read by Rev. A. H. Hoyme at the Trinity parsonage. Miss Arenson was attired in a navy blue sheer with a shirred bolero jacket and blue and white accessories. She wore a corsage of red roses, sweet peas and baby breath. Miss Hanson was gowned in a white alpaca sheer with a black three-quarter length coat. Her accessories were black and white. She wore a corsage of pink roses, orchid and white sweet peas and baby breath. The brides are both graduates of the Brooten high school, Mrs. Harrison, in the class of 1929 and Mrs. Arenson in the group of 1930. The former has been employed as an assistant in the offices of Drs. Rydburg and Shipstead for the past five years. Mr. Arenson is a local high school graduate, class of 1921, and is now engaged in the automobile business here. Mr. Harrison is employed as telegraph operator and has been stationed at Brooten for some time. Both couples left immediately after the ceremony to enjoy a honeymoon motor trip to Duluth and other points in Northern Minnesota. Saturday evening the two couples were honored at a supper given by the brides' mothers, Mesdames Robinson and Hanson. Fifteen guests were entertained and were seated at a table decorated in green and white. Lighted candles enhanced the festive board which centered with a two-tiered wedding cake. Miss Mabelle Evelyn Arenson, daughter of Mrs. Ida Arenson, and Mr. Menvil Imsdahl, son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Imsdahl of Brooten were quietly united in marriage on Tuesday, June 23, at the home of the bride's mother. The words that made them man and wife were read at 4 o'clock p.m. by Rev. A. H. Hoyme. A six o'clock wedding dinner was served at the home of the bride's mother, attended by twenty-five guests. The bride is a graduate of the Brooten High School and the Glenwood Normal department and for the past year or more has taught in the neighborhood schools. The bridegroom is one of the pleasant and accomodating salesmen at the store of the Farmers Co-operative Mercantile Co., a position which he has held for the past five years. Both of these young people have been brought up in the neighborhood and command the respect and esteem of all. Mr. and Mrs. Imsdahl left the following day on a wedding trip to Itasca park, International Falls and points in Canada, following which they will take up the more serious duties of home-making in Brooten. | 4379 | «i»Newspaper clipping, origin unknown, probably Brooten Tribune:«/i» "The following account of the Pofahl-Arenson wedding reprinted from the Mankato Free Press, issue of Tuesday, Nov, 4 will be of interest to Brooten folks: In the Swedish Lutheran Church, marriage vows were exchanged Sunday afternoon at two o'clock between Miss Francis Pofahl, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gust Pofahl, 328 West Fifth St., and Mr. Walter W. Arenson of Brooten, Minn., who formerly was employed at the Lamm Drug Store at this place. Mr. Menville Imsdahl of Brooten, played the Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin as the Processional and Mendelsohn's Wedding March as the recessional. The bride was gowned in a beautiful orchid color silk charmeuse which was further enhanced in beauty by a bridal veil of embroidered tulle. Her only ornament was a string of pearls. A shower bouquet of sweetheart roses tied with tulle made up the bride's bouquet. Miss Ida Wilder of Chicago, a cousin of the bride, who attended as bride's maid, wore a frock of blue canton crepe and she carried an arm bouquet of pink carnations tied with pink tulle. Mr. James G. Arenson of Brooten, a brother of the groom, acted as best man. Following the ceremony the bridal party and their guests went to the home of the bride where a wedding dinner was served at five o'clock. Covers were laid for one hundred guests. The table was beautifully decorated and a large wedding cake formed the centerpiece. The dining room colors used were lavender and white. Mr and Mrs. Arenson will be at home to friends after December first at Alexandria, Minn. where the groom is employed at the Boston Drug Store. The out of town guests were Mrs. Ida Arenson, mother of the groom, James and Mable Arenson of Brooten, brother and sister of the groom, Menville Imsdahl of Brooten, Mrs. C. Swift and family of Morristown, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Drager, grandparents of the bride, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Prange and family, Mr. and Mrs. John Wilder, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Drager of Wells, Mr. L. A. Johnson of Minneapolis. After the ceremony a reception was held at the home of the bride. About 120 guests attended. Arenson, Hoffman, druggist, were conducted Monday afternoon, September 3, at 2 o'clock at Lands Lutheran church with Rev. Axel Kordahl officiating. Burial was in Kinkead Memorial cemetery, Alexandria. Vocal selections at the service by Karl Kolstad of Alexandria were "The Twenty-Third Psalm" and "Jerusalem, the Holy City." Pallbearers were J. V. Dalum, Hoffman, Merle Green, Detroit Lakes; Leonard Ledum, Elbow Lake; Stanley Olson, Hoffman, Douglas Oppel, Alexandria; Herman Schultz, Alexandria, Ornal Benson, Hoffman, alternate. Honorary pallbearers were Dr. James H. Cain, Hoffman, Layton Johnson, Minneapolis, Dr. H. Linde, Cyrus; A, M. Mevig, Hoffman; Edgar Nordquist, Minneapolis; Dr. LeRoy Prescott, Alexandria; Dr. Leslie Stock, Hoffman. Mr. Arenson's death occurred at 2:30 a.m. August 30 at University Hospital, Minneapolis Walter William Arenson was born August 1, 1901, at Belgrade, Minn., the son of George and Ida Arenson. The family later moved to Elbow Lake where Mr. Arenson attended school. The family moved to Brooten where Mr. Arenson continued his schooling and was employed at the local drug store. Upon graduation he attended Minneapolis Scholl of Pharmacy, conducted by Prof. Drew of the University of Minnesota Pharmacy department. He graduated as apprentice pharmacist at the age of 19 and was licensed as a registered pharmacist in 1932. In 1924 Mr. Arenson married Frances Pofahl of Mankato. They first made their home in Alexandria and later he was employed in various cities throughout Minnesota. Five children were born to this union. In 1932 the Arenson family returned to Alexandria, where Mr. Arenson was employed at the Lewis drug store for seven years. In 1939 he accepted management of the Pioneer Drug in Hoffman. On Nov. 13, 1940, he founded the Arenson Drug store, which he and his family have operated the past 16 years. Mr. Arenson was a member of Lands Lutheran church, Hoffman; the Minnesota State Pharmaceutical association, and an active member of the Hoffman Commercial club. Survivors include his wife, Frances; four children, Mrs. B. H. Gowen (Dolores), Minneapolis; Merlyn, at home; George, Hoffman, and 2nd Lt. Gerald Arenson, Tucson, Ariz. He also leaves two grandchildren; Terry Wayne and Shari Kay Gowen; his mother, Mrs. Ida Robinson, Brooten, and nine brothers and sisters: James Arenson, St. Paul; Mabel (Mrs. Menvil Imsdahl), Brooten; Hazel, (Mrs. H. H. Baker), Kerkhoven; Mildred, (Mrs. Anderson), Brooten; Eleanor (Mrs. Charles Harrison), Valley City, N. D.; Cora Arenson and Clarence Arenson, Brooten; Donald Arenson, Minneapolis; Violet (Mrs. James Snyder), St. Paul. | Arenson, Walter William (I20199)
